May Day by Josie Jaffrey

It is my stop on the blog tour with The Write Reads gang for Josie Jaffrey’s novel, May Day. The first in the Seeker series. This story has bite! I mean who better to track down a vampire than a detective who is one too?

In Oxford, Jack Valentine is a vampire, (all vampires are known as silvers) and she’s a detective. The youngest in her unit, the Seekers. Jack has a good track record, gets results but not usually in the best way. She is always at loggerheads with her captain and has a personal grudge against the local Baron, Killian Drake.

On May morning a human is found dead and the killer is suspected to be a vampire, hence the local vampire ‘police’, the Seekers are asked to investigate. Jack is convinced that Killian Drake has something to do with the murder and as she and her team investigate, Jack is led into a world of conspiracy among the vampire elite. The case becomes connected to other murders in London, so just what, how and why happened?

This novel has some interesting vampire lore embedded within it which makes it refreshing. There are some cliché moments, (teen angst) but this doesn’t derive from the fact that this was an enjoyable read. The writing flows nicely with a plot full of mystery, (a good whodunnit) leading to a great way of re-vamping a detective novel.
