The first of shadows by Deck Matthews

Riven Realm copyThis is my stop on the blog tour with The Write Reads gang and The First of Shadows by Deck Matthews is one epic first novel and introduction to the Riven Realm series.

I totally enjoyed this novel. From start to finish I was enthralled in the world that Deck Matthews has created. It is intricate in design with all the characters, lands and magic but it isn’t overly complicated that you loose track of anything or what is going on. The action jumps straight off the page from the beginning and doesn’t stop.

Caleb Rusk is a skilled young rigger on the Blasted Coast. Despite his crippled leg this doesn’t stop him from being the best rigger. He is happy in his work and has no reason to think his life is going to be any different from what it already is. However, Caleb helps a stranger, a drifter who has been wounded by a demon that continues to pursue him. This is when Caleb’s life is turned upside down. With help from a mercenary, a girl with magic and a sky pirate, Caleb’s journey begins.

Now if that isn’t enough to be going on with, we have a series of unexplained deaths in the capital of Taralius. Second Corporal Avendor Tarcoth is asked by the Ember Throne to investigate. The Queen however enlists Tiberius Alaran to assist Avendor. A blind sage with knowledge that could help or hinder the Realm.

As I’ve mentioned above, this was the perfect first novel into a series that I am definitely going to continue to read. The writing is fluid, with everything paced nicely keeping you engaged. Deck Matthews, I think I may be a fan.
